Hands-On Help, Given With Dignity

When getting through the morning starts to feel unsafe, a shower, getting dressed, standing up from a chair, that is when personal care helps most. It is the hands-on, daily support that lets an older adult stay in their own home instead of moving somewhere they do not want to go. For families from Cherry Hill to Medford, it is the difference between managing and not.

Personal care is delicate work, because it touches the most private parts of a person's day. Our caregivers are trained to give that help in a way that protects a loved one's dignity and never makes them feel like a burden.

What personal care covers

Personal care is hands-on help with the activities of daily living:

  • Bathing, showering, and grooming
  • Dressing and looking put together for the day
  • Help getting up, moving safely, and transferring in and out of bed or a chair
  • Toileting and incontinence care, handled with respect
  • Medication reminders so doses are not missed
  • Help with eating and staying hydrated

Many families pair personal care with companionship, so the same visit covers both the hands-on help and the company. We can build one plan that does both.

Safety is the real reason families call

Most calls about personal care come after a scare. A fall in the bathroom, a parent found on the floor, a near miss on the stairs. The bathroom is where many falls happen, and it is exactly where a steady, trained hand makes the biggest difference. Personal care is not only about getting tasks done. It is about getting them done without the next trip to the emergency room.

A nurse sets the plan, and one coordinator runs it

Because personal care is so hands-on, it gets real clinical oversight here. Our compassionate Director of Nursing, Carol Feliciano, BSN, RN, comes to the home before care begins, looks at what your loved one can still do safely and where they need a hand, and writes the Plan of Care the caregivers follow. She updates it as things change. Your single point of contact is a dedicated Client Care Coordinator, Charice Creecy, who goes by CC, who manages the schedule and supervises the caregivers, so you are never left coordinating the help yourself.

Personal care depends on trust between two people, and that trust is not automatic. If your loved one is not comfortable with a caregiver, tell us and we will change the match. We would rather make the switch than have anyone grit their teeth through it.

How to start personal care

It begins with a phone call to Kyra, our intake coordinator, who listens to what is going on and sends a written preliminary care plan before you decide anything. The nurse visits next to set the plan. There is no long-term contract. Reach our Cherry Hill office at (856) 857-6120.

Common questions about personal care

What is the difference between personal care and companion care?
Personal care is hands-on help with bathing, dressing, mobility, and toileting. Companion care is non-medical: company, meals, errands, and a watchful eye. Many families combine them in one plan, and we can start with either.

How does paying for personal care work?
Most families pay privately or through long-term care insurance, and when a policy covers it we file the paperwork and bill the insurer directly. We are private-pay and do not work through Medicaid or state programs. Call us and we will talk through the cost based on the hours and help your loved one needs.

Can veterans benefits help pay for personal care?
Often, yes. Comfort Keepers is an official VA provider, and many wartime veterans and surviving spouses qualify for the VA Aid and Attendance benefit, which can help cover hands-on care at home.

Will the same caregiver come each time?
That is the goal. Personal care works best with a familiar face, so we keep the same caregiver, or the smallest possible group, with your loved one. Consistency matters most with the most personal help.

How do you screen the caregivers who give this care?
A background check is only the minimum. We also check references, our nurse does a hands-on skills assessment, and we keep detailed notes over time. We employ our caregivers and take responsibility for them, and we are accredited by NIHCA to a hospital-grade standard.
